Make Puppets Not War
Where: 452 W. Chestnut. From Picacho, turn North on Alameda and left (West) on Chestnut. It is Mo’s house (her studio).
When: Our first meeting was 1 PM to 4PM on Sunday 10 Nov. Mon 4 to 7 PM will be more Paper Maché and we will get them ready to paint on Tues (4 to 7 PM). We are getting the first puppets ready for display for Wed 4-6 Peace Vigil event (downtown Las Cruces, Church Street).
Bring: Newspapers, flour, water, string, chicken wire, balloons, scissors, string
Ilana is also bringing blueprints for making foam puppets. The idea is to cut shapes from foam and sew them between pieces of cloth. With some luck, the end result is a comfortable and pliable body-suit puppet that can be contorted into politically progressive postures. If that appeals to you, bring cloth, foam, glue, thread and needles to the workshop on Sunday, as well as the previously mentioned supplies for making the paper maché puppets.
Food: Bring snacks, popcorn, fruit, whatever you want to eat.
What: We will make life-size puppet heads to use in Street Theatre scenes. During this first Puppet Making Workshop, you will learn to make a Puppet Head out of papier-mâché. We will let them dry in Mo’s studio and return another time to paint them.
Why: We intend to use the puppets at the 4-6 PM Peace Vigils in front of the Federal Building on Church Street on Wednesday. In this way we create more of a show for the spectators and are more apt to draw the attention of the media.
Who: You can make the puppet heads. You can opt to bring them to the Vigils and to other PeaceAware.com events.

Street Theatre: This is the first Meeting of our “STREET THEATRE” group. We will name the group and begin to plan out some simple routines based upon Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. There are links at PeaceAware.com if you want to learn more before you go.
How: How did this come about? David Boje surveyed each of the people who came to Peace Vigil (6 Nov) and collected group suggestions dboje@nmsu.edu - Boje teaches theatre to his leadership students. Ilana Lapid Ilanalapid@yahoo.com has worked with the Yale Theatre group and will lead us in the Papier-mâché workshop.
