CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of Tamara Journal for Critical Organization Inquiry (http://tamarajournal.com/):

At the Intersection of Aesthetics and Ethics

Submission Deadline: 1 February 2010

Although often thought of as being analytically distinct, there is a place where discussions of ethics and aesthetics within and around organizations tend to come together.  Over twenty years ago Brady (1986) argued that an aesthetic approach to ethics moved us from Òknowing thatÓ to Òknowing howÓ and that ethics were a form of art.  Ten years ago Dobson (1999) argued that virtue ethics were fundamentally aesthetic in nature.  With this special issue we are looking to revitalize and further mine the rich vein where ethics and aesthetics meet.

We imagine the range of concerns papers might address could include:

á        What is the conceptual relationship between ethics and aesthetics?

á        Empirical accounts of beautiful ethics, ugly ethics, ethical ugliness, and so on.

á        Where do ethics and aesthetics meet or diverge in everyday management practices?

á        How an aesthetic perspective sheds light on what makes action ethical.

á        How an understanding of ethics enriches our understanding of aesthetics.

á        The shadow side of aesthetics and ethics.

á        How might aesthetic categories be applied to ethics – what is beautiful ethics, what is sublime ethics, what is grotesque ethics, and so on?

á        What are the implications for conducting research into ethics if it is approached as an art form?

We also look forward to being surprised by submissions that take the intersection of aesthetics and ethics in directions that we had not imagined.
