CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of Tamara Journal for Critical Organization Inquiry (http://tamarajournal.com/):

HOW NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES #ARE IMPACTING POLITICS

Submission Deadline: 1 March 2010

Tamara will be publishing a special issue on the theme of how new information technologies are impacting contentious and electoral politics. This is an important theme because new technologies require a re-conceptualization of collective action and mobilizing efforts in that most theories that deal with mobilization efforts are based on face-to-face interaction. Some of the questions that contemporary social movement and critical theorists are grappling with are how do recruitment efforts, a sense of collective identity, motivation and participation, change when more and more organizing and activism is done in the virtual sphere. Can we qualify this difference and if so how? Is the virtual world replacing the material one in terms of organizing for social change or complimenting it?

Another pressing question this issue hopes to address is how new technologies such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc. affect the way that political candidates recruit supporters, fundraise, and disseminate and receive information. Are these forms of social networking enhancing participatory democracy? Can they perhaps lead to what Habermas referred to as communicative action in the public sphere? Is this public sphere being re-established online? The questions have become increasingly pertinent during the last two presidential campaigns, and the Obama administration in particular has utilized virtual forms of communication to establish and sustain a strong base of supporters.

These are tentative questions but other related ideas are more than welcome. Papers should be submitted to Victoria Carty (carty@chapman.edu). August 30 is the deadline for submission and I anticipate the refereeing process to be complete by December 1.
I look forward to your contributions.
