Young award-winning artist to be featured at “IN EFFECT” Gallery for the month of August. Reception Friday, August 7, 5-7 PM.
Lulu W. Hedrick, a recent graduate and class valedictorian of Alma De Arte Charter Art High School, will present a one woman show of her various media explorations through the month of August. The IN EFFECT Gallery is located at 514 W. Griggs Ave. just 2 blocks west of Main St. in downtown Las Cruces.
Lulu has serious plans for her career in art, already planning to work in a variety of venues; illustration of books, story writing for cinema, illustrations and painting, to name a few. The artist has a truly unique perspective from which to look at the art world; one foot solidly in her rich Chinese art culture, the other in “western” approaches to art in various forms. This expanded view of the art world gives Lulu a wide open path for her talent to grow.
Her body of work is truly a unique mix of the two cultures; both in comparison and contrast, and this will enable the artist to appeal to many different tastes, while at the same time letting the viewer apply their own interpretations to the work.
For more information contact the gallery by phone- 526-1551, or e-mail to ineffectgallery@mac.com
IN EFFECT Gallery is a local, cutting edge contemporary gallery in downtown Las Cruces searching out young, underexposed local talent and providing them with gallery experiences not normally available to many artists. Additionally, the gallery returns 80% of the sale price back to the artist- a percentage practically unheard of in the art world.

The Tombaugh Gallery will feature fiber art by Cyndi Clark and Jan Harrison in “Finding a Voice through Fiber.” The exhibit opens Monday August 3rd and continues through Friday, August 28th. An artists’ reception will be held Sunday, August 9th with from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. The Tombaugh Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces is located at 2000 S. Solano, with regular gallery hours on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2:00 pm.
Cyndi Clark has worked in many mediums over the years. She focused on clay work for about 10 years and has now transitioned to fiber art. “While I still love working with clay, I have found my true inspiration through fabric and yarn. Fiber not only is creative but it can provide comfort to others,” Clark explains. A work Clark plans to feature in the show is “Freedom’s Price,” an art quilt that has a piece of fabric and the name of every soldier who has died in Iraq and
Afghanistan since September 11th.
Clark holds a B.A. from College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University in St. Joseph, Minnesota and a J. D. from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has attended numerous workshops since 1990 in clay art and fiber art. Clark is currently co-owner of Unravel Yarn & Fabric Shop and Courtyard Quilting in Las Cruces.
Jan Harrison has been involved in fiber as a knitter for more than 25 years and has gradually progressed to weaving on a floor loom and basketry. She first made traditional rugs on the loom and now does tapestry. She has moved from making vessels to sculptural basketry. Harrison loves curves, movement and texture in her work. In weaving on a large floor loom, she was challenged through the process of weaving a straight line repeatedly. She has done extensive experimentation in achieving movement and using yarns of many sizes and textures. She also uses unexpected materials and colors. The same techniques go back and forth in her tapestries and basketry.
Harrison is a retired elementary school teacher with a passion for all types of fiber. Her work can be seen at the Unsettled Gallery in Las Cruces and in Silver city at the Common Thread.
For information about “Finding a Voice through Fiber”, please call the church office at 522-7281.

Gold Camp, now on WSMR; was there a school there c1908-1910? Gold Camp was a small mining community about a mile southeast of the Garrett ranch. So far, we can find one report of a school, but it is suspect.
So: Are we still wondering what happened to the opera house moved from Hillsboro? It went to Los Palomas .... Not the one in Mexico south of Deming, but the one west side of the Rio Grande River below Hot Springs, now known as Truth or Consequences. Then came the Caballo Dam of dirt ... and the back water ....
Pat Garrett and Elvis seen riding in Elvis' Cadi? Interesting that Pat's death escapes the New Mexico and Dona Ana County Death Records. Reminder, Cal says: "All historic facts are subject to change hourly.
OLD LAS CRUCES CITY HALL - SOON VACATED - We have proposed to the committee the old building be used as repository for archives generated in Dona Ana County; that a seasoned and grizzled archivist be hired to guide all the participating users. First flash; several potential users like the idea, the idea may catch fire and get serious consideration.... Pass this along ...
WWHA - Annual convention details: July 15 - 18, Alamo Plaza. You know where that is.
We believe the NM Farm and Ranch Museum should annex the four sections adjacent to their present little campus. It is free, we think NM Governor with US Senator Bingamin can do it. He did something similar for NMSU at A Mountain across the street.
Think about it: Our State Representative Paul Taylor would drive from Mesilla to Santa Fe, attend his committee meeting, and drive home that night. Year after year .... No wonder he eventually grew old ..

Sin Fronteras: Writers Without Borders and Friends of Branigan Library will bring two outstanding authors, Stefi Weisburd and Craig Holden to the Sunday Reading Series at 3:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. Reception and book-signing follow the reading.
The well-known New Mexico poet, the late Gene Frumkin, was a friend of Stefi Weisburd’s family when Stefi was very young. Frumkin and Stefi’s father, Mel Weisburd, started Coastlines literary magazine in Los Angeles in the 50’s, so poetry was in the air for her at a very early age. She says, however, that she “didn’t really come back to poetry until my 40’s,” at which time she took classes with Gene Frumkin and was in his poetry group for several years before his death.
Weisburd is the author of The Wind-Up Gods (Black Lawrence Press, 2007), which won the St. Lawrence First Book Award. Barefoot, a collection of poems about naked feet (for children) is out this year from Wordsong Press. A Breadloaf scholar, Stefi is a Winner of The Nation/"Discovery" Prize in 2002, and her poems for adults have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, Poetry, The Paris Review, Ninth Letter, Sin Fronteras, Born.com and others. She's been a policy analyst for Congress, a staff writer at Science News magazine and an Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow at Business Week, and a member of the poetry board of the Blue Mesa Review for seven years. Currently Weisburd is an educational outreach coordinator for a nanotechnology program at the University of New Mexico. In February she plans to go on a Lannan Foundation Writing Residency in Marfa, Texas.
As a hiker, hunter, and dog person, Craig Holden says he has found a home in New Mexico. He says, “I am usually out in the desert three or four times a week with the hounds, hiking and exploring. . . . We've visited with coyotes, jack rabbits, lizards, a horned toad, a box turtle, and hawks.”
Holden is the author of the novels The River Sorrow, The Last Sanctuary, Four Corners of Night, The Jazz Bird, The Narcissist’s Daughter, and Matala. He is a recipient of the Great Lakes Book Award in Fiction, and was a featured guest at the Festival International du Roman Noir in Frontignan, France. His books have been translated into a dozen languages. He has taught at the Universities of Michigan and Toledo, and is currently the visiting writer at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

The primary purpose of the session is to facilitate development of a
unified regional platform to present at the annual state-wide Media
Industries Strategy Project which will be held in January. In order for
our region to get "our fair share" of the resources being expended by
the state, it is imperative that we have a coordinated position. There
are a variety of competing opportunities, needs and constraints which
will be reviewed to help develop a consensus view.
This event should be of interest to a broad range of regional
businesses. In addition to the impact on those companies dealing
directly in the creation, marketing and distribution of digital media,
there is substantial potential impact on businesses that can provide
services to film production and similar activities (i.e. hotel,
restaurants, catering, equipment rental, electrical services, etc.).
The summit is expecting a good cross-section of media, government and
education leaders but would like to greatly expand the participation of
the business community.

Throughout the gallery are black and white posters of classic photographs with motivational quotes by such notable figures as Martin Luther King Jr., Bob Marley, Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks. These pictures and statements, such as Mandela's words, "Let Freedom Reign," remind onlookers of the faces and roots of racial equality and cultural change.
Visitors to the gallery during this special time may also see real life, undiluted examples of African culture. An example of The Village Bowl sits atop a pedestal draped in bright green cloth. Nearby, a dark wood carving depicts three identical faces and abstract bodies that have been intertwined, with the goal of holding up a large pot wrapped in straw. The carving is not attributed to any one person, but the name of it is "Three Heads Make Better Than One." In one corner is a strong-looking wheat basket, which looks as if it might be meant to be strapped on someone's back for the purpose of gathering wheat. Under some interesting, modern paintings on one wall is a set of two drums: The Male Drum and The Talking Drum. Finally, sitting high and proud on one wall is a wood carving of "The Sankofia Bird," which is an African Symbol of wisdom. At the exhibit, none of these artifacts are explained: onlookers are provided only with the name of the objects. But they are interesting to view." From NMSU Roundup

Las Cruces Slam Poets have been slamming the Las Cruces Poetry scene since 2004. The group was first affiliated with NMSU, and formed by students Daniel Molloy and Valerie Beltran. The goal of NMSU Slam was to expand creativity through the art of performance poetry, more specifically, Slam style performance. Since 2004, Las Cruces Slam Team has been invited to perform for Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and El Paso city events. The team has also worked closely with Las Cruces Public Schools to get younger students involved in this exhilarating style of performance poetry. Las Cruces slam offers Slam Poetry workshops, focusing on performance, content, and stage techniques.

The event is in Hardman Hall, Room 106 on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces, and is a Women's History Month event. 7:30 PM.
Choi is the translator and editor of the anthology, "Anxiety of Words," which features the work of three of Korea's most innovative contemporary feminist poets, Ch'oe Sung-ja, Kim Hyesoon and Yi Yon-ju. Their poems challenge some of Korea's most enduring political, social, gender and literary norms. As part of her presentation, Choi will discuss the ancient tradition of Korean women's poetry, and how these women resist the expectation that it be gentle and subservient. She will read the poems in Korean and English. A question and answer session will be included, and a reception will follow the event.Don Mee Choi's poems, translations, essays and interviews have been published in more than 20 publications. She grew up in Korea, moved with her family to Hong Kong to escape the political oppression, and now lives in Seatlle. This event is presented by Zephyr Press, NMSU's Women's Studies and the Confucius Institute at NMSU, and received support from the New Mexico Humanities Council and the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry.

Looking Ahead
The Border Book Festival Celebrates its 15th Anniversary. “Art is the heart’s explosion on the world. There is probably no more powerful force for change in this uncertain and crisis-ridden world than young people and their art.’ Luis Rodri´guez
The Border Book Festival, Inc. (BBF) will celebrate its15th anniversary festival with some interesting changes. Over 3,500 artists have been a part of this longest running book festival in New Mexico since its inception in 1995. This year the festival will celebrate its cornerstone School Outreach Program by filming a documentary that highlights the Emerging Voices/Emerging Artists program. Filmmaker Rick Batalla from Los Angeles will be working with the festival to document its work.
Since its inception in 1995, the School Outreach program has been a pivotal component of the festival, going into hundreds of local, area and regional schools, taking storytellers, musicians, potters, dancers, theatre artists, photographers, writers and other multi-discipline artists into community settings to offer performances, workshops and hands-on experiences for people of all ages.
This year the BBF will host singer/songwriter Perla Batalla and her musical group and writer Luis Rodri´guez, author of the powerful autobiography Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days In L.A., in what the BBF hopes will be an empowering experience for the community, celebrating the nature of art and creativity.
The Trade show and Children’s parade will be moved to the Fall to accommodate families, young people, students and teachers in a Multi-Cultural Family Festival in Mesilla. We will continue to sell the featured writers books and artist CDs at this year’s festival. Over the years the festival has grown so large that this year organizers want to concentrate on the documentary filming. This year the BBF will still offer the public a smaller but still magical series of readings, panels and workshops.
With the idea of gathering stories, poems, memories, meditations and ruminations, the public is invited to send the BBF reflections, stories and artwork that reflect on the number 15. For example:
15 Reasons to Live in Peace
15 Favorite Books
15 Favorite Meals
15 Sacred Memories
15 Reasons to Love the Desert
15 Lessons I’ve Learned In My Life
15 Favorite Sayings or Dichos
When I was 15. . .
We will gather the 15s as we move toward our 15th annual Border Book Festival in April 2009. We will share these lists and stories with you at the festival. So, put on your thinking caps, and reflect on the 15s! School outreach dates are Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17, with readings, panels and workshops taking place on Friday-Sunday April 17-19. Luis Rodri´guez will read on Friday, April 17 at the Mesilla Community Center. A Silent Auction will feature the sale of artwork and writing featuring the theme of Sandi´as/Watermelons inspired by the work of Mexican artist, Diego Rivera. Las Sandi´as (1957) was Rivera’s last painting. Watermelons, a symbol of life, were to be found often in his work. A call is given to all local and area artists to donate Sandi´a/Watermelon art, literary or multi-genre pieces to the festival to assist with the School Outreach program. Deadline for submissions is April 5. The BBF will be selling a signed Diego Rivera print, The Fruits of Labor/Los Frutos del Trabajo during the festival. The lithograph was donated by an anonymous donor and is numbered #49 of #100. For more information on the lithograph or the Silent Auction donation, contact the festival. Perla Batalla and her group will visit local and area school, and offer a performance on Saturday, April 18 that will feature the talents of local school children and youth. School outreach sponsors are needed. Please call us for information. A community volunteer meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 24 at 6pm at the Cultural Center de Mesilla, 2231 Calle de Parian. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help with this year’s festival. For more information, contact the BBF at bbf@zianet.com, www.borderbookfestival.org or 575-523-3988.
