  2. ---IMPORTANT -

Please pass this information on to all of your members and any other artists you know outside of the network, and encourage them to participate.

The New Mexico Art in Public Places Program now has a call for artists in various media on their website www.nmarts.org.  This call for artists only happens every two years beginning July thru the last business day in August.  If you don't get into the pool during this submission, you'll have to wait two years to apply again.  Complete information, and the application procedure can be found on their website under the "Art in Public Places Program".

We encourage all local artists to participate in the process.  The call occurs only every two years, and submitted works can be selected from their pool of submissions for public facilities (buildings, parks, etc.) all over the State, as well as in our own area.  The City is reviewing with the State the possibility that one or more of our new City buildings may qualify for the funds, and we certainly want our own artists to have their work purchased, if not for one of our buildings, one somewhere in the State of New Mexico.

“Is That You?” Non-figurative Portrait Show at the Tombaugh Gallery

The Tombaugh Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces announces its fourth annual juried all-media exhibition to be held Aug. 29-Oct 1.  The theme of the show, “IS THAT YOU?”, considers the concept of a non-figurative portrait.  The challenge to the artists, juried in by acclaimed regional portrait painter Carolyn Bunch, was to present the characteristics of a person without use of the human form. The show opens to the public on Sunday, August 29 from 11:30-12:30. A reception will be held on Friday, September 3 from 6:30-8:00 pm, overlapping with the monthly Downtown Ramble.

The show features regional artists 18 years old or older living within a 150-mile radius of Las Cruces, NM.  All work was completed within the last 2 years and much of the art has been done specifically for this exhibit.  Participating artists are Ryan Ames, Jia Apple, Peggy Brown, C. Copeland, Flo Hosa Dougherty, Penny Duncklee, Glenn Holgerson, Lynn M. Kelly, Karl Kohl, Diane LeMarbe, Judy Licht, Meredith Loring, Tom McFarland, Rosemary McKeown, John B. Northcutt, Deborah Welch Prickett and Roy van der Aa. The mediums are varied and the concepts are imaginative. There is a good blend of painting, multimedia in various materials and sculpture. Beads, torn paper, wood, fabric, digital painting and wallpaper samples all make an appearance in works in this show.  Juror Carolyn Bunch says, “ I was intrigued by the concept initially and the artists went a step further than one usually sees. This is an innovative and enjoyable show.”

The Gallery is located at 2000 South Solano Drive in Las Cruces.  Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-2pm. For additional information call the Church office at 575-522-7281.

  12. THE ARTIST DEADLINE IS DRAWING NEAR FOR

    COLOR LAS CRUCES
    THE DOÑA ANA ARTS COUNCIL’S
    FIRST ANNUAL PLEIN AIR COMPETITION

A final call is going out to artists wishing to be part of the first Color Las Cruces Plein Air Competition and Community Arts Festival, September 11 & 12, 2010.  During the event weekend, juried artists will compete for cash and merchandise prizes in one of two Plein Air categories.

In addition, on Thursday, September 9 and Friday, September 10, Denver artist Kevin Weckbach will give a two-day Plein Air workshop, which is open to artists of all levels. The deadline for registration in two Plein Air competition categories, as well as the two-day workshop is August 13, 2010.

We’re hearing from some artists that they are not comfortable painting Plein Air, so to introduce them to the process, we’re creating a special price for Kevin Weckbach’s two day Plein Air workshop:  Two for One – bring a friend and you may each enroll in the two-day workshop for $150.  Kevin is an outstanding instructor and looks forward to working with artists of all levels – those with no Plein Air experience, as well as “professionals”.

Plein Air painting is not rocket science; it is simply painting outside in natural light rather than in a studio setting.  Artists familiar with sketching can do it, so broaden your experience and come paint with us.  If you are not comfortable with the process, simply enter the workshop to prepare, then register for the “open” category in the competition.  The prizes are generous in both categories.

For artist entry applications, workshop enrollment, general information, and details on the full weekend of festival events, call (575) 523-6403 or visit www.Las-Cruces-Arts.org.

This email was sent by Alice Ward, Secretary of ArtForms.

  13. The New Mexico Watercolor Society, Southern Chapter, will hold its September meeting on Sunday, September 12, at 2:00 p.m., at Good Sam's, 3011 Buena Vida Circle, off Telshor near Memorial Hospital, in the Arts and Crafts Room in the Administrative Wing (there is parking close to the entrance).  After a brief business meeting,  there will be two programs.  First, there will be a short follow-up to the April photomontage presentation by Sylvia Bowers. Members who participated in that exercise will share their finished paintings with the attendees.  There will then be an interactive figurative drawing workshop presented by local art instructor Lorenzo Zepeda.  Mr. Zepeda, who received his BFA from NMSU and has conducted painting, drawing and retablo classes throughout Las Cruces, will lead participants in creating natural movement and poses by focusing on the relationship between the ribcage, pelvis and the spine. For those of us who feel we “just can’t draw,”  this is the meeting to attend!   If you wish to participate in the drawing program, bring drawing paper, a firm backing or board, pencils and an eraser. The public is invited; there will be a $3.00 fee for members; $5.00 for non-members.

For further information, contact Carolyn Bunch at 532-9310.

  16. Mesilla Valley Dance will offer three dance workshops for children and teens this summer at the Mesilla Park Recreation Center, located at 304 W. Bell Avenue in Las Cruces. Each two-week session will run from 12:30pm to 5:30pm Monday through Friday, with lessons in ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, improvisation, and choreography being taught every day. Students will experience a variety of dance styles, learn basic dance technique, experiment with movement, stay active, and have fun this summer. Visit mesillavalleydance.webs.com to register or for more information.
The first session, "Fly," will be offered for children ages 6 and up, and will run from June 1-June 11. Students will take off into the high energy world of dance, exploring themes of lift and flight. On the last day of classes the students will present a dance for family and friends based upon the Icarus myth utilizing all the dance styles learned in the workshop. This camp is being offered to coordinate with A Children's Theater of the Mesilla Valley's morning workshops, also held at the Mesilla Park Community Center, offering a full day of performing arts activities. See www.zianet.com/act for information about ACT's summer theater workshop.
The second session, "Invent," also for children ages 6 and up, will run from June 14 through June 25. Invention, innovation, and exploration in history, science, and the arts will be the basis of instruction for this workshop. Our end of the session show will be invented by the dancers with a historic theme. This workshop is also available in coordination with ACT's summer theater workshop.
"Elements," an advanced session for older students, will be offered from August 2- August 13 for ages 12 and up. Earth, water, fire, and air will combine to provide explosive opportunities in ballet, jazz, modern, Hip Hop, improvisation, and choreography for advanced dancers. A performance demonstrating the lightness of ballet, the explosive heat of jazz, the fluidity and freedom of modern dance, and the grounded power of hip hop will show off the dancer's skills at the end of the two weeks.
Tuition for the workshops is a great value at $250 for fifty hours of quality instruction. A 15$ discount will be awarded for referrals and siblings. A $100 discount will be offered for those students registering for two or more camps subject to full payment by the first session they are attending. Space is limited to 20 dancers per session, so early registration is recommended. A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a space.

teens this summer featuring ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, improvisation,
and choreography. Each two-week session will run from 12:30pm to 5:30pm
Monday through Friday, with short lessons in each dance style taught every
day. Students will learn short dance pieces in each style and the sessions
will culminate in a performance for parents and friends on the last day.
These workshops are a chance for youth to experience a variety of dance
styles, learn basic dance technique, experiment with movement, stay active,
and have fun this summer. All sessions will take place in the dance studio
at Mikey's Place: A Workshop for the Arts, located at 3100 Harrelson St. in
Las Cruces. Visit www.mikeysplacenm.com for more information about the

  24. The Tombaugh Gallery presents ONE LAND, MANY VOICES, a photo documentary by Carol Eastman for the month of May. The exhibit will open Sunday, May 2 from 11:30 noon to 2:00 p.m. and will run through Friday, May 28th. The suite of photos reflects the U.S./Mexico border through the eyes of children. Wall text will be in English and Spanish.
ONE LAND, MANY VOICES is a photo documentary that captures the activities and emotions of children and youth who live along the Rio Grande on the southern border of Texas. They move easily between 2 and sometimes 3 cultures on both sides of the River. Their conversations are a mix of English and Spanish words; they enjoy a hamburger from McDonalds as well as a tortilla from the corner grocery store; they watch basketball games and play soccer; they celebrate Thanksgiving and the Day of the Dead. Their daily lives are dictated by a mix of cultural, environmental, and economic conditions. Despite the harshness of the land, their meager possessions, or their social circumstances, their ability to adapt permeates what they do.
Many of the children have deep roots in the borderlands. Others are newcomers, children of soldiers or migrants, whose lives are continuously disrupted as a result of national and international events. Over time, they become a community who reflect a sense of oneness and place. These photographs attempt to capture their resiliency and the spirit of life expressed by these children in their everyday experiences.
Carol Eastman, photographer, writer, and illustrator, received a Master of Arts degree in Art Education from the University of Texas At El Paso. She also studied at workshops in Maine; Taos, NM; Sedona, AZ; San Antonio, TX and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. Her photographs, writing, and illustrations have appeared in several southwestern magazines and journals. She has taught design at El Paso Community College and University of Texas at Pan American; Art Appreciation at UT/Pan American, and drawing/composition and photography at the El Paso Museum of Art Museum School. She has exhibited at the Chamizal National Memorial, The Rotunda at the state capitol building in Austin, TX., and various shows and galleries in the area.
The Tombaugh Gallery of the Las Cruces Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 2000 S. Solano. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 2pm. For information, call 575-522-7281.

  35. For the last eight years, the Las Cruces GFWC Progress Club has held a commemorative art exhibit to honor those lost on 9-11-01. Entitled “5,000 Flowers,” the community of Las Cruces has provided paintings, sculpture, quilts and other floral tributes for the exhibit.
The “5,000 Flowers” show for 2010 and 2011 will be different. The Progress Club has chosen to create two large towers covered in painted flowers. Small blocks of wood will be painted with 10 flowers each and placed on the wooden towers that replicate the World Trade Center. Each tower will hold 2,500 flowers for a total of 5,000 flowers by 2011.
This is a two year project, and the first tower will be completed by 9-11-2010 with the second tower completed the following and final year of the art exhibit. The towers will then be given to public buildings in the area as permanent art installations so the message to remember those lost on 9-11 will continue.
We are seeking artists of all ages to paint blocks to be placed on the towers. Each participating artist will be given credit for their work.

Please read the following specifications to participate.

    1. Pick up your block(s) at the Branigan Cultural Center in February 2010; or contact Rebecca Courtney, mlcourtney@comcast.net or 575-522-8243, to arrange delivery of your block(s). You will need to fill your blocks out with your name, address, phone number, email. We want to be able to contact you and give you credit at the show.

    2. Paint the 4 1/4” x 4 1/4” wood block face with a design that contains 10 flowers. Paint exactly 10 flowers and no more or no less. Paint on the white gessoed side only.

    3. Use acrylic or oil paints that can be varnished when completed. Choose either a cool palette (odd numbered blocks) or a warm palette (even numbered blocks). Blocks will be arranged by color palette on the towers. For example, the artist would paint an array of 10 flowers in blues, purples, lilacs with greens for the cool palette; or the artist would paint in reds, yellows, oranges with possibly some greens for the warm palette. Style is the artist’s choice.

    4. Please fill the entire area of the primed/gessoed side with your design. Do not paint the sides because they need to remain gray.

    5. Sign your block in the lower right-hand corner.

    6. Return blocks DRY!

    7. Return your block(s) by June 15, 2010, to the Branigan Cultural Center or contact Rebecca Courtney. If mailing your blocks, send to Rebecca at 1805 Pinehurst, Las Cruces, NM 88011

  36. Realism in Still Life by Penny Thomas Simpson at the Tombaugh Gallery

The Tombaugh Gallery presents the elegant and accomplished watercolors and colored pencil drawings of Penny Thomas Simpson for the month of March. The exhibit will open Sunday, February 7th from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. and will run through April 2nd.
Penny Thomas Simpson has been a working artist in New Mexico for nearly 34 years. Although she studied graphic design in college, illustration was her main interest. Colored pencil was her preferred medium for many years but the discovery of 300 lb Arches watercolor paper changed her artistic life. “This show brings together a variety subjects and mediums that have captured my interest over time,” Penny states. She focuses primarily on still life, fruit and flowers, with dramatic lighting a key component in her very realistic work. “I love a bit of drama so I do many of my paintings with bright sun and long shadows. I also like to have some luminosity if possible in my fruit and flowers,” says Penny about her approach to painting.
Penny has won numerous awards both in state and nationally, most recently second place in the New Mexico Watercolor Society’s 2009 Fall Show. Weem’s Gallery in Albuquerque features her paintings as well as a yearly booth in Weem’s International ArtFest. A well-known piece of hers is the life size Trail of the Painted Pony “Apple-oosa”, which is on display at the Eagle Ranch Gallery between Alamogordo and Tularosa.
Her pony was also made into a collectible miniature. Penny lives in Las Cruces and has her studio in an old adobe house with great views of the Organ Mountains.
The Tombaugh Gallery of the Las Cruces Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 2000 S. Solano. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 2pm. For information, call
    575-522-7281.

    Thanks,
    Jo Ingle

  37. This spring we are requesting a $20 deposit for registration in any of the workshops. The reason for this is that we have had too many no-shows and night-before cancellations,
making it impossible to fill spots when there are people waiting. I sincerely hope this is not an inconvenience for anyone, but know that you understand.

In general, the classes are for adults. However, on occasion a youngster is really interested and in that case I welcome their participation.

If you have friends you think would be interested, please let them know about the schedule!

  39. The Tombaugh Gallery is having an opening Feb 7, with a repeat Feb 19 for a show with an Australian theme. I recall that you may have had a digeredoo player at the finale of the Arts Conference. If so, could you get me his name and number? We would like to see if he could play the opening.
  40. Here is a message from Cheryl Fallstead, For the Love of Art Month publicity chair.

We are just a week away from the kick-off of For the Love of Art Month! I
thought you might be interested in an update on the publicity front. This
Friday's Bulletin will feature For the Love of Art Month and the Sun-News will do the same beginning, I believe, on Sunday. Both papers will continue to provide information throughout the month. It will also be on the front page of Southwest Senior and will certainly be featured prominently in The Ink and Desert Exposure. Information has been sent to newspapers in El Paso and around New Mexico.

My interview with Fred Martino on KRWG TV's Newsmakers show will be broadcast three times beginning this Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. In addition, I'll be doing an interview with Carrie Hamblen to be broadcast on KRWG FM's Images this Saturday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m. I already did Southwest Senior radio and talked it up for an hour. I will continue to work to keep the events in the public eye throughout February.

I hope you all have a wonderful For the Love of Art Month and I look forward to seeing art all around the Mesilla Valley!
