TSI does not charge for this facilitation - Thank you|

RESULTS: 2008 Arts Convention was attended by 150 people representing 75 organizations of Las cruces & Mesilla Valley Arts Scene: an extremely talented and diverse group. Now we extend to Dona Ana County, to unite arts scenes throughout the region. How about a 1,000 people in 2009 who share stories, plan missions, and see how problems and obstacles were inter-connected. A new culture of between organization-cooperation began to emerge last year, and a deeper understanding of the economic issues facing the Arts Scene. Participants initiated 10 task forces that worked in cooperation with local leaders and organizations on Winterfest, the Museum Scavenger Hunt, marketing templates for small arts businesses and groups, and bringing people into the Arts & Culture Scene as customers, who had not been there before. The work is continuing as we set the groundwork for Arts Convention 2009.

What has Arts Convention Done? The 1st annual Arts Convention of Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley is wrapping up their event on Sept 22. Faculty and students of the Business College are working with local artists and arts organization members to do work on task forces between Sept and Dec 8th. To date the Arts Convention participants formed 10 task forces, each one of them developed mission statements, and set three goals to accomplish by Dec 8. The key theme of the Convention has been how to improve the arts economy so artists in the visual, performing, and literary arts make more money. The Mayors of Mesilla and Las Cruces, as well as many arts organization leaders (such as Heather Pollard of DAAC, Greg Fant Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences, ...Cindi Fargo of Downtown Las Cruces, Lori Grumet the Director of City of Las Cruces Public Services, Wayne Crawford and Dick Thomas for the literary arts, Steve Fishmann & Leonard Rawson, and many more) have addressed the Convention. Ways artists and arts organizations can market events has been a key concern to delegates. Ed Breeding, a local filmographer premiered his new film, "Heart of the Arts." The documentary film allows people to discover the magnificent and diverse artist's works in Mesilla Valley.

The 2008 1st ARTS CONVENTION of Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley grew out of earlier Talking Stick Institute initiateves. For example in Oct and Nov 2008, TSI worked with the local arts community, passing the Talking Stick to weave some dream stories together. Our of this came many ideas which students of the Business College recorded in their notebooks. One idea was to get 100 leaders of the Arts Scene together in 2008 for an Arts Convention.

Talking Stick Institute is a non-profit initiative of David Boje and David Tobey. This example is our pro bono service to the community of artists

The Las Cruces Arts & Culture Scene brings together experience and expertise in economic development and marketing to market the City of Las Cruces as a place to buy art and enjoy performances. The Scene  will be inclusive of all the arts, including the painting/visual arts as well as literary, musical and performance arts. The aim is to be an ‘idea incubator’ that will help every arts organization.

MISSION: Las Cruces Arts & Culture Scene is evolving to bring Arts Service Organizations & Galleries together with stakeholders (City + Education + Chambers of Commerce) to market City & Region as an Arts & Culture Destination. Our Mission is to lure art buyers to Las Cruces

VISION: Las Cruces Arts & Culture Scene is building a ½ billion-dollar arts industry, and becming one of the top 25 arts destinations in the US within five years.

Talking Stick Institute Board members, Ruth Drayer, Virginia Maria Romero, and David Boje are now working together on the Las Cruces Arts & Culture Alliance proposal. Virginia Maria Romero asks that the process begun by the Arrowhead Center in 2007 continue. Local Artist Ruth Drayer asks that the process begun by the Small Business Consulting classes of the Business College continue.

New Mexico has a major arts scene, with 3 cities in the top 25 arts destinations in America according to American Style Magazine: Albuquerque is #7 in top 25 big cities; Santa Fe is #1 and Taos #5 in the Smallest 25 cities category. When Las Cruces is recognized by the State of New Mexico - Department of Cultural Affairs for the outstanding Arts Destination it has become, then Las Cruces has a good chance of making the list. All we have to do is show the world that we have more galleries, artist, and arts service organizations than Portsmouth (#25 on the Small Cities - under 100,000 in population. Portsmouth has 6 galleries - Las Cruces has 44 galleries and museums. There are differences: ART-SPEAK IS THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH'S CULTURAL COMMISSION. Currently Las Cruces does not have an Arts & Culture Commission. We therefore propose the Arts Alliance.
