John Villani writes about creative communities and creatively
inspired people. His work has been featured in Art in America,
Vanity Fair, The Christian Science Monitor, Art News, Urban Land,
Southern Living, USA Today, Native Peoples, Sunset, Southern
Accents, Dallas Morning News, Southwest Art and many others
He lives in Santa Fe, and has held art sector positions such as visual
arts critic of the Arizona Republic daily newspaper, and
Communications Director at the Institute of American Indian Arts, a
four-year tribal college and contemporary art museum.
His recent book, “Art Towns California” profiles 27 communities
from Mt. Shasta to La Jolla where artists and arts groups have
reshaped economies, revitalized neighborhoods, and restored
community pride. A second edition will be released in 2011.
He’s also author of “The 100 Best Art Towns in America”, published
in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2005, and an all-new 5th edition coming in
early 2010. This national guidebook from The Countryman Press
profiles exceptional communities where the arts play key cultural,
economic development and tourism roles.
In his consulting projects John advises arts organizations, downtown
business owners and artist entrepreneurs in neighborhood
campaigns establishing culture-and-arts districts. More often than
we realize these efforts transform not only their targeted districts
but entire communities inspired become Art Towns.
