Thursday, March 6, 2003 - Thousands of Students Walk Out of Classes to Protest Possible War - By JEFFREY R. YOUNG - Thousands of students at more than 350 colleges and high schools walked out of classes and held rallies on Wednesday to protest a possible U.S. war with Iraq. Some professors canceled their classes to support the protesters. "Books not bombs" was the theme of the events, organized by a coalition of 15 student groups called the National Youth and Student Peace Coalition. http://chronicle.com/daily/2003/03/2003030602n.htm

Media
Democracy's Moment By Robert W. McChesney and John Nichols, The
Nation
February 25, 2003 Senator Fiengold says, ""We need to remind the
FCC that radio is a public medium. It must serve the public good."
In a January speech that linked the struggle for media reform to broader
efforts to renew American democracy, the senator argued, "People should
have choices, listeners should have a diversity of options, and Americans
should be able to hear new and different voices. Radio allows us to connect
to our communities, to our culture and our democracy. It is one of the vibrant
mediums we have for the exchange of ideas, and for artistic expression.
We must fight to preserve it."
The Dangers of Dissent "Dissent isn't easy these days. You're branded unpatriotic for questioning an unelected president's rush to war, and dismissed as insignificant even when you number in the millions. It gets much worse. If you work in an American university, you could be blacklisted, harassed and even lose your job for questioning the Bush Administration's conservative pro-war agenda. Thanks to a small number of deep-pocket groups with close ties to the government, campuses have been pummeled with a right-wing political agenda; one stated goal is to replace liberal-minded professors (found to be "short on patriotism" or failing to teach that civilization itself "is best exemplified in the West and indeed in America") with more politically correct conservatives." PBS "Plans for a Post War Iraq" Feb 11 - Note from PeaceAware -It is clear that the administration has plans for Iraq oil in the post-war governance and regime change. They say in this that the Iraqi people will control the oil resources. That would be nice. I have other sources that report that 3 top US oil corporations are already making bids with the post-Iraq regime puppets being put into place. See PBS article http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/jan-june03/iraq_2-11.html Also see the Oil War documents on PeaceAware.

The mainstream media continues to undercount the turn out at Peace Events. Albuquerque the Jan 18 Truman Gate event at Kirtland AFB, drew at least 2000 people, and the media (KOB-TV and KOAT-TV) reported it as 300. Sun News, Las Cruces reported the 500,000 person DC turnout as "thousands."
