ACTION - Stop Bush Veto of Bipartisan Effort to Rollback Controversial Media Ownership Rules. The American public made it clear - they didn't like the FCC decision - and both Democrats and Republicans in Congress agreed. The Bush Administration is threatening to veto legislation that would restore safeguards against further media consolidation. The Administration has warned Congress that, "If this amendment were contained in the final legislation presented to the President, his senior advisers would recommend that he veto the bill." We need to tell President Bush to listen to the American people, not to the media industry or his "senior advisors." pResident Bush needs to hear from YOU! Sign the Common Cause Petition today!

MediaAware - Look at the ways that Corporate-Dominated News in America instructs its employees to manipulate the news. It is a form of postmodern theatre, the theatre of symbol manipulation, the substitution of simulation for the horror of war, the selling of heroism in place of the war crimes. The presentation is as stage-managed as the talking points at the Republican 2000 convention. The 4th estate is now an extension of the 3rd estate, to control the public mind.

No Media Acccountability for Spreading false reports about WMD? - Mike Hersh writes: "Thomas Friedman of the New York Times - and the mass media in general - cannot be troubled to hold Bush accountable. After tacitly endorsing the series of lies the Bush Administration used to justify the war, they now applaud Bush's continuing circus train of fabrication, distraction and deception." Hersh runs Friedman's latest pro-Bush blather entitled 'A Postcard From Iraq' through the wringer looking for something real. Read Story.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY AND URGE THEM TO OVERTURN THE FCC BY CO-SPONSORING AND VOTING FOR SENATE BILL 1046:

Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121

Or you can search for your Senators' office numbers by entering your zip code at http://www.mediareform.net/stopthefcc.

As you know, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on June 2 to allow a handful of large media corporations to own even more media outlets than they already do. We have already seen the effects of the 1996 media deregulation: five television companies -- General Electric (MSNBC and NBC), News Corp (Fox), Disney (ABC), AOL-Time Warner (CNN), and Viacom (CBS) -- have a stranglehold on what information the public gets to know, and corporate radio behemoths like Clear Channel Communications devour local radio stations and replace them with McRadio. If the FCC decision is allowed to stand, the situation will get even worse -- competition, diversity, and local content in media will be undermined in communities across the country.

The good news is that on June 19, the Senate Commerce Committee responded to the public outcry against the FCC decision. It approved Senate Bill 1046, and added several amendments that, if approved and passed into law, would overturn key parts of the FCC ruling.

Now our job is to get our Senators and Representatives to act on our behalf and support this legislation. The first step is to get as many Senators as possible to co-sponsor S. 1046.

*If you have time for one more phone call, please also call your Representative and urge him or her to support similar legislation that has been introduced in the House of Representatives (Bernie Sanders' House Resolution 2462).

Did you know that Clear Channel Communication owns and operates 19 radio stations in New Mexico? (source). Clear Channel is the country's largest broadcaster, with 1,200 radio and 19 television stations nationwide. 2.

A few weeks ago, we asked you to send emails to the five commissioners at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asking them not to allow giant media conglomerates to control even more of the airwaves and newspapers. Members like you were part of the largest public outcry in the history of the FCC with commissioners receiving hundreds of thousands of messages opposing the plan. But these political appointees voted three to two along party lines to allow the corporate giants to control even more of what you see and hear.

Members of Congress are now considering ways to overturn the FCC's decision. The Senate is moving first with a meeting of the Commerce Committee on June 19 to discuss the problem. We need to encourage every member of the Senate to tell members of the committee to put out a strong bill to overturn the FCC's vote.

Tell your Senators to overturn the FCC's bad decision. Just click here.

How is the postmodern theatre directing what the media presents to the American spectators?

First there is Clear Channel. Clear Channel is the main organizer of the pro-war rallies. Clear Channel uses its 1,200 local radio stations and corporate website to promote pro-war rallies. Clear Channel also owns a radio research company, 36 television stations, a number of radio trade magazines and over 770,000 outdoor billboards. The chairman and CEO of Clear Channel is L. Lowry Mays. The telecommunications deregulation of 1996 under the Clinton administration has led to a concentration of media in the hands of a few corporate marketeers such as Clear Channel. Before 1996, a media corporation could only own two radio stations in any one market, and no more than 28 stations nationwide. It is time to repeal the 1996 telecommunication deregulation act. It is also time to resist the TV corporation's move to deregulate even further "Fox, together with network heavyweights CBS and NBC, is pressing the US federal communications commission to dump rules that prevent a TV broadcaster from owning another network or a radio station and newspaper in the same market" (read more).

US broadcasters' war stance under scrutiny Annie Lawson, The GuardianRupert Murdoch's [Net worth is $5.3 Billion] Fox network is among the US media giants accused of tailoring its war coverage to curry favour with Michael Powell, the George Bush-appointed chairman of America's media regulator who is facing mounting pressure to scrap media ownership rules... Disney, which owns the ABC network, is calling for the relaxation of all broadcast ownership rules and is vehemently against a proposal to open network prime time to independent producersread more

Second, rather than working through the United Nation or abiding by international law, the Bush administration takes advantage of deregulated and concentrated media to run slick advertising campaigns that appeal to the Americana and super-patriotism sentiments of the Americna public. Facts are no longer important. People across America are systematically mis-informed about (a) relation of Iraq to 9-11, (2) relation of Iraq to al Queda, and (3) the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Once the military was mobilized using such disinformation, the Bush campaign switched rhetoric to "support the troops." Everyone supports the troops, but the problem is this focus takes attention of the resons for going to war. That reason is a fear campaign orchestrated by the Bush administration in a corporate controlled media. The fear and disinformation campaign set up yet another rhetoric shift. This was the shift from just "support the troops" to "support the President and the Troops."

Third, the Bush administration and Pentagon systematically trained and controlled the "embedded" media in Iraq. The military then targeted independent media for expulsion, and where that did not work, bombed the hotel where independent media was housed in Baghdad, and destroyed the Iraqi media. See this next photo of Independent, International journalist intimidation.

The theatre of media presentation of Iraq continues.

CLICK HERE FOR THE Staged Photo Events for and by the Embedded Journalists reporting on Iraq. - The postmodern theatre production is used to create the illusion of victory, to construct a staged-event of liberation that seduces the public to recall the fall of the Berlin wall and the liberation of France in WWII. Here is a deconstruction.

April 6th: Iraqi National Congress founder, Ahmed Chalabi is flown into the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah by the Pentagon. Chalabi, along with 700 fighters of his "Free Iraqi Forces" are airlifted aboard four massive C17 military transport planes. Chalabi and the INC are Washington favorites to head the new Iraqi government. A photograph is taken of Chalabi and members of his Free Iraqi Forces militia as they arrive in Nasiriyah.

April 9th: One of the "most memorable images of the war" is created when U.S. troops pull down the statue of Saddam Hussein in Fardus Square. Oddly enough... a photograph is taken of a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of Chalabi's militia members... he is near Fardus Square to greet the Marines. How many members of the pro-American Free Iraqi Forces were in and around Fardus Square as the statue of Saddam came tumbling down?

The up close action video of the statue being destroyed is broadcast around the world as proof of a massive uprising. Still photos grabbed off of Reuters show a long-shot view of Fardus Square... it's empty save for the U.S. Marines, the International Press, and a small handful of Iraqis. There are no more than 200 people in the square at best. The Marines have the square sealed off and guarded by tanks. A U.S. mechanized vehicle is used to pull the statue of Saddam from it's base. The entire event is being hailed as an equivalent of the Berlin Wall falling... but even a quick glance of the long-shot photo shows something more akin to a carefully constructed media event tailored for the television cameras.

IF YOU HAVE $20,000 IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA TO AWAKEN THE SLEEPWALKERS - Subscriber Buys FTW Full Page Ad in The Washington Post -Leaked Copy May Have Forced Resignation of Army Secretary. May 16, 2003, 0500 PDT (FTW) – From The Wilderness today ran a full-page ad in the front section of The Washington Post intended to educate the American people, support heroic leaders and promote a number of independent media outlets which have made important contributions since 9/11. The ad was the direct result of a donation from a subscriber who had recently viewed FTW Publisher Mike Ruppert's video "The Truth and Lies of 9-11". ... In two places the ad featured statements highly critical of now-former Secretary White. In her statement Fitts criticized White for his inability to balance the Army's books at a time when the Department of Defense has admittedly "misplaced" more that $3 trillion of taxpayer money. Ruppert observed, "White's claim that residual damage from the attacks of September 11th was the cause for unbalanced books in the Army was ludicrous. The attack of 9/11 hit the Navy Wing of the Pentagon. How could that affect the Army?" In the text of the ad itself White was also criticized for his role as an Enron executive which provided him with millions of dollars in income while stockholders were being defrauded. White was subsequently investigated for insider trading of Enron stock. See the ad - see text of this story.

Did you know that Google has modified its search engine so that it does not bring up Indymedia and other peace activist sites. It appears to have humanly intervened and blocked all Indymedia stories from being listed through its service. Is it Pro-war patriotism on Google's part? Or an attempt to block Indymedia anti-semitism? It's not clear, but its another thumbs down for Google -- a company once hailed as the savior amongst search engines, but quickly becoming more yahoo than Yahoo. Read the story.
