A Poem by T. Wark
Beyond 'Guernica'
There is a picture,
A most compelling picture.
Picasso painted it at white heat
Three-quarters of a century ago
And still like "Lysistrata" it
Shrieks its horror of war,
Begs for Peace.
You hid it
When you lied
To the world,
USA!
You masked Guernica
As you masked the Truth,
USA..
You dared not let Truth show through
For Truth trumps the might
Of your arms,
USA.
He is your man, Bush,
He is your "attorney general."
He is from Missouri where
He lost an election to a dead man
And you have resurrected him
To head a once-proud nation's
Department of Justice.
He hides it
Under a shroud,
Justice's bosom,
This Ashcroft.
Hides her very breast
While he pietizes,
This Ashcroft.
He dares not let Justice be seen
While he savages our rights
And freedoms,
This Ashcroft.
What do they hide?
Truth and Justice!
What do they fear?
Truth and Justice!
Why? Why? Why?
There is a paper,
A most compelling paper.
Madison and Jefferson wrote it
With deliberate speed,
Majestic instancy, and then
Manifested it for all mankind,
Our Constitution.
What do they hide?
Our Constitution!
What do they fear?
Our Constitution!
Why? Why? Why?
There was a nation,
Forged in revolution,
Tempered in Civil War,
Melting pot of cultures
And religions and colors,
Smelt by rule of law,
Our Constitution.
You hid it
When you lied
To the world,
USA!
You masked Guernica
As you masked the Truth,
USA..
You dared not let our Law prevail
For Law trumps the might
Of your arms.
You buried Our Constitution,
USA.
