12 NOON - 1:00: Mayra Besosa, AAUP CBC Executive Committee Corbett - Colfax Room

Sharing the responsibility: Bridging the Gap between Tenure and non-Tenure Track faculty. The increased reliance of academic administrations on non-tenure track teachers has implications for tenure-track and contingent faculty alike. 
Mayra Teaches Spanish on a full-time contingent faculty appointment at Cal State San Marcos, and is California Faculty Association chapter faculty rights representative with senate experience; co-chair of the AAUP Committee on Contingency and the Profession; and member-at-large of the AAUP CBC Executive Committee.

1:15 - 2:30 Campus Cafe. Conversations on defending higher education

Modeled on World Cafe, AAUP national staff and members of the local steering committee will facilitate informal small group discussions with members of the NMSU community over coffee and food in Corbett (Colfax Room).  Join us!

Campus life and family balance in a time of economic uncertainty

Professor Martha West retired from full-time teaching in 2007; was General Counsel for the American Association of University Professors, 2008 – 2010; Associate Dean of UC Davis School of Law, 1988-1992; th with J. Curtis, wrote the AAUP FACULTY GENDER EQUITY INDICATORS 2006. She chaired the subcommittee that drafted the Statement of Principles on Family Responsibilities and Academic Work, which was adopted as AAUP policy in 2001. West has also served as a member of the Association’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure (2002–05) and as chair of the Legal Defense Fund (1998–2002).

7:00 PM: N'se Ufot, AAUP Government Relations - Milton Hall - Rm 169 Taking action to defend public higher education:  Local, state, and national issues

N'se, former Labor Organizer, now organizes Government Relations at the State and National level for AAUP. N'se will wrap up the Day's Actions and discuss the future of AAUP and American universities.

October 8-9 - Take a morning bus Trip to Albuquerque to the National AAUP meeting of Collective Bargaining Council. Contact info@nmsuaaup.org if you would like to attend. Then come back on Saturday night by bus to Las Cruces.

 

September 5 - NMSU-AAUP Steering Committee Retreat in Truth or Consequences. Car pool Saturday Sept 4th, return Sunday afternoon to Las Cruces.

August 16 - MEMBERSHIP: Liaison / Database / Mapping - Committee will be meeting at Corbett Center at 1:30 with Mike M., Steve L, Olga, Martina, and anyone else who wants to join us.  Preparation of materials for Fall Membership Drive, Project Tumbleweeds, Database updates, etc.

August 16 - STEERING MEETING - Cafe ago go on North Telshor (where the Red Mountain Cafe used to be) 6PM - meeting 6:30-8 PM

August 17 the main campus Convocation (table inside Corbett lobby) to meet Michael Mauer and Dave Witt of AAUP. 9AM to noon

April 1st 4 PM - The NMSU Faculty Senate decided Mar 11 to not be a co-sponsor to this event as there is no precedence for such a relation. Instead our chapter chair will present on the issue at next Faculty Senate meeting April 1 at 4pm at Senate Chambers in Corbett Center. David Boje presented a summary of issues of transparency in the budget process, and research showing the positive relations between AAUP and faculty senates, and administrations across the country. He publicly thanked the faculty senate for the work they do. SPECIAL REPORT slide show - What is Transparency? was basis for Boje's oral NMSU-AAUP presentation to Faculty Senate - April 1st, and was distributed to the senators.

We invite all senate members and officers to attend and participate in the April 9th forum. We are also inviting the administration to give its response to the presentation on the Financial Health of Higher Education in New Mexico (not final title) at this forum See FAQ and click question/answer 8 to how can AAUP and Faculty Senate work together.

MARCH 7 2010 - “Founding an AAUP Chapter: NMSU Faculty Organize” beginning with a potluck at noon, and meeting at 12:30 pm at the AFSCME hall in the downtown Main Street Mall (at the south end), with parking on Water Street. Please bring a friend.

DESCRIPTION of March 7 Meeting: Open meeting to talk about why we’re forming an AAUP chapter (the problems at NMSU and how the structure of an AAUP chapter can be an effective way of dealing with them). Focus is on how to reach out to people to join AAUP and to participate in the chapter work. NMSU faculty (including adjunct, CC and grad workers) interested in organizing the AAUP chapter here at NMSU. Discussion with Mike Mauer (AAUP’s Director of Organizing and Services from Washington, DC) and Dave Witt (faculty member at the University of Akron, and vice chair of AAUP’s Collective Bargaining Congress) about AAUP’s work nationwide and how we can strengthen the faculty voice at NMSU through an AAUP chapter. An all-NMSU steering committee will be formed and the chapter's officers and committees will be elected in due time, during the months ahead. Your help is requested in spreading the word.

 

MARCH 6 2010 - 11 Am to 1PM Dave Witt and Michael Mauer from AAUP will be at Milagros Café on Univ. Ave, and invite anyone and everyone who wants to have a cup of coffee or grab a bite to eat to join them. This meeting is open to all. Please bring a friend.

MARCH 6 2010 - 1:30 PM - Saturday Core Working Group planning meeting of NMSU AAUP on the afternoon (offsite in Las Cruces) Please contact dialog@peaceaware.com for directions and more information. Working Group is about 12 or so people who have been attending meetings to organize NMSU AAUP chapter.

MARCH 4 2010 - The UNM AAUP chapter is sponsoring a forum on the crisis in American higher education on Thursday, March 4, from 3 - 5 p.m. (As you may know, faculty, student, and other constituencies across the country are taking a variety of actions on that day to focus attention on higher education.) There will be presentations from AAUP labor lawyer Michael Mauer and U. of Akron AAUP chapter president Dave Witt.
