Our perspective as environmentalists, Bush and Congress are attacking nature--Otero
Mesa, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Colombian Amazon, endangered species,
etc.
Please Don't Let them Hijack Otero
Mesa - place your phone call to Pete Domenici's Washington,
D.C. office. His phone number is 202-224-6621. Once again, the message is, we
want Senator Domenici to:
1. Stop the BLM from leasing the Otero Mesa for gas drilling, because you care
about the Otero Mesa.
2. Take the lead in introducing legislation to permanently protecting the Otero
Mesa.

EPA Hijacked by Bush Administration - Global Warming is good for you - "The EPA has struck a deal with monster animal farms that lets them leak stinking animal crap and other pollutants all over, to their heart's content. In exchange for promising not to sue -- ever -- EPA demands a mere $500 fine (yes, just five hundred dollars) and also a contribution of $2,500 toward a fund to, yes, study the problem of rivers of stinking animal crap. Perhaps they could save money by combining the animal crap 'study' with the Administration's latest global warming 'study'. Or, since this Administration rewrites every scientific or intelligence report it gets anyway, perhaps we could skip the formality and expense of 'study' and cut to the chase of word-processing up a report calling for further study... Here's an idea: Attend the next meeting of your local government and announce you're going to dump 80,000 gallons of liquefied manure into the nearest aquifer -- and that you'll do so again, and again, repeatedly, forever. Offer them $500. See what happens." More ...

Bush War on terror is pretext for War on the Environment. We are witness to a war on the environment, to a reversal of the gains in envionrmental legislation.
There are alternatives
Energy from the Sun - New Mexico has the best sun power in the nation (next to Tucson), and we could be generating off-the-grid electric power, and selling it back to El Paso electric using Photovoltaic solar panels. Prices have come down and it is possible to build a system of a dozen panels with eight storage batteries and all the inverters for under ten thousand. The problem is the El Paso power is a monopoly and has worked a deal the New Mexico State legislature. The deal is a $5,000 charge to any consumer who wants to sell back energy from windmills or solar panels to the energy giant; plus El Paso got a regulation in place in New Mexico requiring an expensive insurance bond. This is a way to protect El Paso power from citizens becoming self-sufficient and solving the energy crisis in this country, not to mention ending dependence on Middle East oil. Do you know that in California it does not cost the consumer $5,000 and an expensive bond for the simple 20 minute inspection for the power company to insure your wiring is done to code; it only costs $200 in California. And what happened to the tax credits, that many other states, give to consumers to get into solar power? Answer: Monopoly happened.
Please Contact the Public Regulation Commission of New Mexico State:

Ask these commissioners to put back the tax breaks for consumers installing solar energy in the sunny state of New Mexico and to stop El Paso Power company's monopolistic practices.
Energy from water - For a long time now I have
heard many debunkers stating that alternative energy sources do not exist.
There is a researcher in France that not only tests these, but puts out
information on materials, procedure, etc. No "secrets" or mysteries,
just a challenge to others to do the experiment and see if it works. We
need a paradigm change now, if for nothing else then to stop the myth that
the only energy source is a limited one that is expensive and that people
die because of. Just thought you might be interested in one of his experiments;
he has many.

READING LIST for PeaceAware (lots of good articles recommended by PeaceAware members).
BOJE ARTICLES FOR PeaceAware (Read about the Oil Wars, a definite enviornmental disaster).
One of the key issues for being EnvironmentalAware is to look at enriched uranium and its manufacture and testing of Enriched (depleted) uranium in New Mexico. David Boje has compiled inforation on New Mexico testing (see main page on DU in NM).
Carlsbad, for example, was picked by the federal Energy Department for nuclear manufacturing. Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad is a potential site for the manufacture of pits, which trigger nuclear weapons of mass destruction. Citizens with Questions leader Gene Harbaugh stated in a press release. "Once the facility is built, it will be shrouded in secrecy, and people will only be aware, after the fact, of the dangers involved." See May 24, 2003 story.
We join Damacio Lopez, Director of IDUST calling upon "Governor Richardson and the State Legislature cease and desist the production and testing of weaponry containing Depleted Uranium (DU) here in New Mexico, in particular these facilities:
To learn more about this important global issue and its impact on New Mexico, Iraq, Afghanistan ecologies, civilians and our own military, see PeaceAware's Enriched Uranium pages and videos.
Did you know? On New Year's Eve, the Bush
administration announced the most aggressive attack that the Clean Air Act
has faced in its 30-year history. The Environmental Protection
Agency has weakened important air pollution regulations and is moving forward
to enact other changes that would make it easier for older facilities to
pollute more. The EPA's proposal would rewrite a key provision of the Clean
Air Act, called New Source Review (NSR), allowing more than 17,000 of the
country's biggest polluting facilities -- including old, dirty power plants,
oil refineries, and chemical plants -- escape rules that require them to
install modern pollution controls when they pump out more pollution. Registered

Did you know the WTO can impact genetically-engineered foods? In May 2003, the United States announced its intention to file a WTO case against the European Union over its de facto moratorium on approval of genetically engineered agricultural crops. Since late 1998, the EU has not given regulatory approval to any new biotech product. The EU de facto moratorium is keeping out transgenic seeds sold by Monsanto andother purveyors of Frankenfoods, whether from the United States, Europe or elsewhere. Read more.

Expectations:
As the owner of a small oil-related business, Pearce will be active on
taxes, energy issues, and economic development (source).
Pearce
says, “I
support opening the Otero Mesa to natural gas production. It would boost
the economy in Otero, Lincoln and Doña Ana counties… Would you
support or oppose expansion of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife effort to
restore Mexican gray wolves in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern
Arizona? Oppose. It is harming the economy of western New Mexico. Would
you support a minimum allocation of water in the Middle Rio Grande for
the preservation of the silvery minnow even if it cuts off water to
farmers and urban users? No, it will harm the economy all along the Rio
Grande.” (Albuquerque
Journal, May 5 2002). |
